MY PALS PUPPY AND PING PONG

I've never kept my pet rats in a cage. They are free range - free to go where they want although they generally just want to stay near me. When I go out I take them with me in the car and at the shops I carry them around in a comfortable bag so nobody can spot them. They've never been any trouble.

One day I went shopping and forgot them.I left them on the counter in the bag. I was just getting into my car when I realised I did not have them with me. I ran back to the store and fortunately the bag was still there. When the shop assistant handed it back to me she didn't know she was carrying two big fat rats.


My guys are called jumbos because they get so big. They are beige and white albinos  and very handsome.  When they were very young they moved around a lot but now because they are much bigger and heavier they don't so I have to watch their weight.


Despite them being hugely overweight I'm hoping they will live a long time - like 3 years or more. Lots of rats die at around 18 months old and mostly from lung infections. You can read lots about  rat health and  illness on the internet but the main things to avoid are dust, smoke, dirt and cold draughts.  Aways keep their bedding clean and fresh and feed them a vitamin rich diet but not too much protein.


I love my guys deeply. Puppy is already 20 months old and Ping Pong is 16 months. I want them to live long because I love them so much and because I think rats get a rough deal in life duration. (So do mice)

Puppy and Ping Pong like to play and roll around and get a belly scratch. One of the sweetest things is when they give you a kiss or blow in your ear to wake you up. Often one will hold my hand with his. They love to snuggle-up.They are adorable creatures and highly intelligent.


How anyone can use these dear creatures for live laboratory experiments I do not understand. It would take a cold and cruel heart. It's not only rats that are tortured like this. Ferrets, mice, cats and dogs are among other animals used.

Please be kind to all animals and if possible stop killing and eating them
