THE HIGH COST OF SEX

Recently decided to have my dog Bambi desexed but vet charges here are heart attack high - nearly  $390 for a wee doggy.

So I rang a pet shop and asked who they used. "Get out of town. It's a lot cheaper",  I was told. "The vets in town all charge very high rates".

The friendly pet shop also told me that old age pensioners could get massive discounts through Friends of the Pound here at Tweed Heads.

Being old and a pensioner I contacted them and asked for a desex. "You or the dog?", said a joking volunteer Friend of the Pound worker.

Anyway it turned out that straight away Friends of the Pound organised everything for just $135.

It involved a short drive to the Cabarita Beach vet. The service was excellent. We dropped Bambi off in the morning and collected her in the afternoon.

Not only had she had the proper and full operation but they also they had cut her claws and we added the annual general injection.

So we saved $255 !

But that's not the only reason I'm writing this. I want everyone to know (especially pensioners) all over the world - if you need to use a vet shop around. Look for special deals from government, councils, animal shelters or anyone who might provide concessions.

Some vets get away with robbery - and often with murder. That's another thing. Check the vet is trustworthy and specialises in your particular pet.

I once had a much loved budgie who was sick. Took him to a vet who said he also handled birds. But he did not. Result was he killed my bird. Result of that was I nearly killed him - but that's another story.

Don't trust  vets.  Shop around on price.  Check out the vet for being trusty and properly qualified. Also you don't want to pay top dollar for a student vet doing the job. You are paying for a proper job. Don't be afraid to question vets and their smiling, smooth talking staff.
