Killing has in fact increased dramatically over time, both of humans and animals. Wars never cease and never in the history of the world has there been such massive killing of animals - billions annually.
Disrespect for animals is manifest in the food industry and Factory Farming. It is also rampant in hunting, cruel animal baiting and fighting games and in entertainment such as circuses.

There are humans with compassion who are not blind to reality and do their best to help animals, to prevent cruelty and gain rights and welfare for them. Hopefully their numbers will greatly increase in time.
These animals activists fight against strong forces that include governments religions and big business - like the food industry that dominates minds with massive PR and advertising for meat and diary products.
Meat and its production is not as it used to be. Factory Farming has turned it into a cruel and torturous operation for animals who are mass produced and pumped with chemicals to increase size and speed their growth. It is shameful.
The United Nations and some governments have issued health warnings about eating and even handling modern meat but they are token gestures. If governments were genuinely concerned about our health they would take far stronger actions.
The world is being fooled by the food industry and those who can see this must continue to sound the warnings.

Even many meat eaters will not condone the gross cruelty to animals. Whenever they discover the truth they are quick to protest. Demonstrations and petitions against atrocious slaughter in Jewish and Muslim abattoirs, for example, have resulted in greater awareness of cruelty and calls for the banning of live animal exports.
There is an increased awareness but it is not enough. It needs to be universal. Respect for our fellow beings and this planet needs to be part of every culture.
Cruelty and slaughter should not be traditional or something we teach to our children especially when there is no need to even eat meat
