We know that animals mourn and can feel sad just like we do when they lose someone dear. But it can be worse than that. They can actually get ill and die because of their loss.
I recently lost Trio, one of my two lady mice . The second mouse Silky was still fit and healthy and eating well but within one month she too has passed away after developing an enormous cyst or abscess that filled more than a quarter of her poor little body.

| Silky (left) and Trio Loving Companions |
Mice experts agree that the loss of a companion can bring on depression, illness and death. It is not uncommon. In fact, I have seen it happen with humans.
They were loving little friends and we were very close and of course I also am feeling depressed - always am when I lose a pet or see any animal or bird die.
The point is that animals are intelligent sentient beings with feelings the same as us. They can feel sad and happy. They can feel joy and pain. They definitely feel love. Even a mouse a rat can love you and enjoy being with you.
The same applies to those poor sentient cattle, sheep, pigs, horses and chickens and many others who are murdered daily.
They experience the terrible fear of death, the pain and they often have to watch in horror their companions or babies butchered before them by heartless humans who put money gain before compassion and mercy.
One day we humans will regret our cruelty to animals. Maybe future generations will not want to talk about the savages of the 21st century and how they killed fellow beings and ate their flesh.
Of course, by that time in the future, there may be no animals left on Earth anyway.
