Don't know why or how it started but humans often use animals as insults. Expressions involving creatures like dogs, rats, mice, pigs, cows, skunks and others have been commonplace for ages.
One insult example is 'dirty rat'- which, like most other animal insults, is totally untrue because rats are NOT dirty. They ( as with mice) like being clean and are continually washing themselves - more so than cats do. I know because I've had pet rats for several years.'

I'll have you know I wash many times a day and I'm highly intelligent

I can be clean. I'm also clever as a dog and have a high intelligence rating
It's true - Dogs are Adorable

We think we're rather gorgeous
Fox might imply being sly or cunning (instead of clever) and people might be called monkeys because they are ugly or mischievous.
Yet all of these animals and others have intelligence.and emotions. Scientists are discovering amazing facts about animal intelligence, ranging from pigs to chickens. They also have abilities that mere humans do not have such as highly tuned hearing and eye sight and a kind of telepathy and advanced intuition.
In addition they possess emotions and feelings of joy, pain, love, fear - even a sense of humour in many cases.
So let's try not use these dignified fellow beings as insults. There are 600,000 words in the English language so surely we can find more appropriate descriptions when we insult someone.
For example, instead of 'dirty rat' you could use scumbag. Instead of 'cow' you might use arsehole and instead of dog you might use contemptible two legged non-believer. There are endless possibilities like meat head - a stupid person.
