Firstly the vet needs to be qualified for the particular task, whether it be tending a dog, cat, horse, rat, mouse or ferret. Some vets, for example, don't do little furry fellows but might still give it a go at risk to your pet.
Birds and reptiles are other specialised areas. You need to be sure the vet is actually expert in that field. Don't be afraid to ask.
Secondly there is cost. Some vets - mostly city based practices - have really heart stopping high charges. So shop around and get quotes.
Thirdly there is service. The staff in some vets are like those in some doctors surgeries - arrogant, bossy and treat you like a peasant.
But there are still compassionate veterinarians around, with genuinely warm, friendly and smiling staff. And they care more about their patients than their pockets.
I discovered Tugun Veterinary Surgery a few years ago. They're on Golden Four Drive, Tugun in Queensland - just a spit away from the NSW border. I genuinely recommend them.
Their email is info@tugunvets.com.au and the website is Tugun Vets
