RELIGIOUS AWAKENING TO ANIMAL CRUELTY

Pope Francis' recent address against animal cruelty is comforting. It is good that the head of a major religion has spoken up for animals at a time when shocking cruelty against them and the killing of them is at record high levels.
Religions have long neglected consideration and protection of our fellow life. Most, in fact, cruelly use animals for sacrifice and do not question the misguided idea that man has the right to kill and eat them.

But there is still a long way to go. Cruelty is wrong but so is the killing of animals - morally, ethically and spiritually wrong.

Will the Pope later reinforce his statements with continued attacks against animal cruelty - and killing?

Will other religions follow suit and preach against animal cruelty and killing?

It remains to be seen what will develop on the religious fronts but one thing is certain. The Pope's statement will help many people see the truth, see the horrors of live animal export and factory farming and the enormous damage being caused to the planet by world meat production.

Great things don't usually happen overnight. Change is usually gradual but many people respect the Pope and may reconsider their life styles and this could be good for animals and the planet.

The Pope had led the way ahead of all other religions and drawn attention to many failings in this modern world, particularly in relation to climate change and world pollution of the land and oceans.

Perhaps our biggest problem is the pollution of our minds. Maybe on many fronts it's time for a rethink about the world we live in and our relationship with it.
